Working from Home: Top 5 Tips from Moi Studio

We are lucky to live in an era where there are digital resources to rely on. Imagine what these moments would be like without them. What would a pandemic of this scale look like in the early 2000s before video conferencing was a thing? Impossible to think about all the what-ifs. What is important now is the next step forward.
How are you fairing with working from home?
Moi Studio is a dispersed team. We work remotely all the time and feel like we can share a bit of knowledge with others. We decided to give our top 5 tips based on our experience. We hope they will make your life a bit easier. We hope you enjoy it!
Our first tip is on software.
The truth is that there is a lot of good stuff out there. Some may cost a small bit of money, while others are free. Overall. The most important part is that software fits your needs. That it fits into your organization. For example, if your company is structured through the Microsoft platform as your email provider then there is Microsoft Teams for video conferencing, OneDrive for file structure, as well as DevOps for organizational structure. If you utilize Gmail there is Google Meet and Google Drive. If all else fails, there is also Zoom, which is very intuitive.
There is software out there that will help you interconnect yourselves even when you are socially distanced. You really should not be socially distanced. Instead, you should only be physically distanced. We all have the capability to talk, interact, and continue innovating within our organizations. Crazy disruptive ideas do not need a physical room. MIRO is an example of great software that helps teams collaborate. It allows you to virtually interact and collaborate as a team. Make sure to check it out (link below for those interested). There are other software like MIRO. Those include Mural and Figma. They are VERY similar. So, pick one and run with it. The truth is that this is only scratching the surface of the software available.

The big picture idea is that software is here to help. There are various software, applications, platforms that you can use, so don’t be shy. Try them. See how they impact your team.
Be interconnected even when you are physically distant.
Next is your schedule.
Scheduling is important! You must remember that you are not going into the office anymore. 8 am to 5 pm is a bit different now. Your Routine will be different too. Take your time into consideration to focus. One of the techniques I like to recommend is micro sprints. This means that you set an allocated amount of time. Let us say one hour. You have a focused task. You will concentrate on this task within that one hour. This technique will elevate your time. You will find that you are less distracted and highly productive. Remember that working from home does not mean you can slack off and doze through the day. Instead, hyper-focus on your tasks and accomplish more with your time.
On the other hand. Do not overwork.
Do not drive yourself crazy and work eight hours straight. Eat! Take breaks! This leads us to tip number three.

You must take consistent breaks. Rest your body and mind. Take care of yourself.
Take a tea break.
Go out for a walk.
If you have been working for more than an hour straight, stop reading, stand up, and take a break. I am being literal here. Then come back. Fresh and ready to learn more.
I cannot emphasize this enough. Your breaks should calm your mind. It is so important to do this for yourself, your body, and your mind. You do not want carpal tunnel or to strain your eyes. Make sure to take care of your hands and do not stare at a screen too long. Try using the 30- 30- 30 rule. Every 30 minutes for 30 seconds look 30 feet away. Your eyes need a rest. When you rest your eyes, you also rest your mind.
What am I saying?
Overall, just take care of the bodies. Treat yourself well.
Working from home is a pleasure but it can also be a burden. Get work done and take care of yourself.
4. Setting Boundaries
Set your boundaries.
If you haven’t already, create your workspace. Put some time and thought into it.
Are you working for a corporation? Tell them you need two or three hours to set up your space. You need to ensure that your home workspace is going to enhance your work. Your space should enable you to do what you need to do.
Remember that lighting is essential. Bad lighting can make you look sleep-deprived. Bad lighting adds years to your appearance. Make sure you have proper lighting. You need to feel comfortable during meetings. Not ashamed of how you look. Make sure your space is organized and not messy. Make it appropriate and fitting your personality.

Separate your workspace from other people, including children if possible. Don’t let your pets bark in the background. Please, this is so distracting. If it cannot be helped, then use the mute button. Talk to your spouse and family. You need to set a boundary with your loved ones. If you love them, you need to be proactive about this and very clear. This will remove possible conflict in the future. Even if you are home, you are still working. Boundaries are easily forgotten, so make sure to look at your boundaries and identify where you can improve them.
You must empathize.
I consider this to be the most important because our society lacks empathy. There is conflict on every horizon. History shows us that we, as people, are prone to conflict when put under pressure. The core solution to the conflict is to be empathetic. To empathize with others is to understand their situations.
Imagine that you in an old boat sailing a story sea by yourself. You are terrified.
There are other identical boats around you on the same stormy path. But they have their spouses, children, elderly, and pets onboard. So their worries are multiplied and more complicated.
Sometimes it feels like we are on that old boat sailing through the stormy sea. We can easily get blinded by our difficulties and forget those around us. But we need to remember that everyone is in the same boat going through the same difficulties or even greater ones.
So, let’s be loving and empathize with each other.
